CAREERS IN SCIENCES: Diversity in Sciences Panel

The Diversity in Sciences panel showcased professionals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds share their unique experiences and provide valuable insights on how to navigate various scientific careers. They emphasized that showcasing your diverse perspectives and experiences, along with a collaborative spirit, is crucial on job applications. Students often feel daunted by job descriptions, but the panel stressed that being authentic and confident in your abilities, as well as demonstrating a willingness to learn, can significantly enhance your career opportunities. The College of Sciences deeply appreciates the guidance and inspiration these professionals provided to our students.
CAREERS IN SCIENCES: Geological & Environmental Sciences Panel

Speakers: Sarah Van Deventer, Peter Arth, Danielle Haulsee, and Robert Manriquez.
Professionals in the Geological & Environmental Sciences field discussed their backgrounds and provided advice on how to start careers in their respective industries. They highlighted that in many geological and environmental roles, it is vital to demonstrate fieldwork capabilities and collaborative skills on your job applications. Students often feel intimidated by job descriptions, but the panel stressed that being honest about your experience and showing a willingness to learn new techniques can take you far. The College of Sciences is extremely grateful for the valuable guidance they provided to our students.
CAREERS IN SCIENCES: Math & Statistics Panel

Speakers: Joe Long, Vicky Vo, James Hasson, and Julie Garcia.
Professionals in the Math & Statistics field shared their experiences and offered advice on how to embark on various careers within their industry. They stressed that in many mathematical and statistical roles, it is essential to exhibit strong analytical skills and the ability to work well in teams on your job applications. Students often find job descriptions daunting, but the panel emphasized that being truthful about your abilities and demonstrating a readiness to acquire new skills can significantly advance your career. The College of Sciences is immensely thankful for the guidance they provided to our students.

Speakers: Mariel Cardenas, Natalie Byrd, Jade Johnson, and Brain Leon.
Professionals in the Chemistry field spoke about their backgrounds and how to get started in their specific industries. They expressed that in a multitude of STEM pathways, it is extremely important to display yourself as a team player and as someone who can collaborate with others on your job applications. Often times students can be intimidated by job descriptions. However, the panel expressed that being honest and confident in your abilities and willingness to learn new skills can get you extremely far. The College of Sciences is extremely grateful for the guidance they were able to provide to our students.

Speakers: Manan Katwala, Jessica Beeli, Kevin Pelaez, and Sonny Bautista.
Professionals in the Computer Science field spoke about their backgrounds and how to get started in their specific industries. They shared information about how their jobs have provided them flexibility as well as the ability to combine some of their various interests. Speakers also shared the importance of being a team player in the workplace and the difference in work tasks amongst company sizes. We even got to hear from 2022 SDSU Alumni Manan Katwala, who is already making great strides in his career. The College of Sciences is extremely grateful for the guidance they were able to provide to our students.

October 12th, 2023 || 1:00pm – 2:30pm || Shiley Bioscience Center Gold Auditorium
Speakers: James Guillochon, Andrew Buckner, Lisa Will, Caelum Rodriguez, and Jeffery Rich.
Professionals in the Astronomy and Physics field spoke about their backgrounds and how to get started in their specific industries. Speakers mentioned that despite making strict plans for your college experience, your time at SDSU can allow you to grow and obtain knowledge in fields you had never anticipated exploring. James Guillochon shared that he initially started as a Computer Science major but switched his major to accommodate his interest in Physics. Caelum Rodriguez also gave students the advice to take advantage of all opportunities provided to you. You never know when a life-changing experience can fall into your lap.
In addition, speakers shared inciteful information about what courses in college helped them the most at their jobs now and how to take advantage of research opportunities. The College of Sciences is extremely grateful for the guidance they were able to provide to our students.

They shared inciteful information about what courses in college helped them the most at their jobs now and how to take advantage of the numerous opportunities SDSU has to offer. Speakers also shared what a “day in the life” looks like for them and the realities of balancing a sustainable work/personal life balance. The College of Sciences is extremely grateful for the guidance they were able to provide to our students.
